The lace-up design of Giro’s Empire Shoe was initially intended to be used only for a custom time-trial shoe for Taylor Phinney during the 2012 Giro d’Italia (the lace adjustment system was chosen for its aerodynamic advantage in comparison with alternative adjustment systems such as buckles). The lace-up Empire has now become something of a performance road shoe market marvel, and now it is available in a women’s specific fit.
The famous laced closure offers a unique 7-point adjustment system meaning that the fit of the shoe moulds closely with the shape of your foot. The breathable Evo fibre upper has excellent shape-holding properties and is very supple, keeping comfort at a premium. Its fused mesh and microfibre construction also repels water and improves breathability without the added weight or comfort penalties of separate mesh panels. The Easton EC90 Carbon provides efficient power transfer and the Super Natural Fit System ensures a comfortable, personalised fit.
In addition to its comfort and performance enhancing design features, the new women’s Empire shoe also looks stunning to boot, with a black patent finish and a choice of stealthy black or eye-catching electric blue lace options (almost guaranteed to get some admiring glances out on the road). However, the Empire shoe is not just for style with its 6.5 mm stack height and 210 gram weight.
A Giro SuperNatural Fit Kit is included and allows the rider to make custom adjustments at home, including to arch support. The use of anti-bacterial and anti-fungal X-Static fibre for the shoe inners will help the shoes stay fresh well into the season.
